History of Andover House – Boutique Hotel in Great Yarmouth
Step into history at Andover House Hotel, a charming adults-only boutique hotel in Great Yarmouth, where Victorian elegance meets modern comfort. Our building has stood as a landmark in the town since the 19th century, welcoming guests with warmth, style, and a story to tell.
From Sir Edmund Henry Knowles Lacon to Andover House
The earliest recorded owner of the property was Sir Edmund Henry Knowles Lacon, 3rd Baronet (1842–1899), a larger-than-life figure in Victorian Great Yarmouth. Sir Edmund was a brewer, banker, and passionate railway enthusiast, managing the family business, Lacons Brewery, while investing in local railways that helped the town thrive.
In 1839, he became the first resident of the house that now welcomes visitors as Andover House Hotel. Beyond his business ventures, Sir Edmund served as a Conservative MP, a Justice of the Peace, and the High Steward of Yarmouth, shaping the civic life of the town with dedication and flair.
With a family of six children and a commitment to the community, Sir Edmund left a lasting mark on Great Yarmouth. Today, guests staying at Andover House enjoy a boutique hotel experience steeped in history, with subtle Victorian details, stylish modern touches, and a sense of connection to the past.

A Glimpse into Andover House’s Past
When I received this beautiful family holiday photo from August 1953, shared by Lee while going through old family documents, I was immediately struck by the charm and character of Andover House.
It’s fascinating to reflect on the time, nearly 20 years ago, when we took over the property. Back then, it was called the Andover Hotel, and I decided to rename it Andover House because it felt more fitting—a welcoming place for everyone to enjoy.
It’s a little amusing to realize now that I chose the name without knowing the original, only noticing it for the first time in this photograph! This piece of history reminds us of the legacy and personality that make our boutique hotel in Great Yarmouth so special.
We’d love to hear from anyone with old photographs or memories of Andover House. Share your story and help us celebrate the history of this beautiful property.
